I was 8 years old when Hazel hit 155km north of Toronto where we had waist deep flooding. The effect of the hurricane is still evident today. Most of those killed lived in homes along rivers where there was massive flooding. Because of this all buildings were removed from river ravines and turned into parks. This has meant that there are parks that stretch many km north of the city and surrounding cities. Which means that many wild animals can make their way well into the city, racoons, oppossoms, ducks, skunks and recently we have seen a beaver busy working away. That hurricane one of the only in the greater Toronto area nad has permanent effects on the area.

The fact that DuPont did this in Virginia & got sued for billions then turned around and did it again is absolutely abhorrent. They made a subsidiary company, Chemours, after stopping production of C8, made a new chemical GenX & did the same damn thing in North Carolina is absolutely mind blowing. How tf is the EPA protecting us again???

My best friend died at 30. He was married. Had a kid, and one more on the way. But I tried and tried and tried to get him to stop using opiates. He begged me to get him into the Army for a referral (since I just got out) but I told him you don’t detox at boot camp. Eventually, it got to the point where he stopped talking to me because he got so fed up with me keeping it real. It’s like “BRO, you’re a parent. I went through the same crap. But I stopped partying after my son was born.” He never grew up. And when he died, I was so angry that he left his two sons without a biological father. I didn’t cry once at the funeral and memorial. I was so mad. Two years later and I finally cried today when his picture of him and I at his wedding popped up in the “reminder” photos memories.

𝗜𝘀 𝗜𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀? We can benefit from a crisis if we understand its true cause and how we heal the world through it. Otherwise, we cannot say that we benefit from a crisis. At their core, all crises we endure emerge from negative human connections. Likewise, their ultimate solution is for us to positively connect above our negative drives. As much as we positively connect, we will accordingly see positive changes in the world. Positive connection means that we will trust, help, support and encourage each other more and more, and harm each other less and less.

The first friend I made on the first day of the first grade was Woody Lockler. He is still my friend along with his 1st cousin David Lowry who's family moved to Eagle Springs in the 4th grade. Woody's older brother Darvil was a great athlete and was also like an older brother to me. Woody's folks called him Junior as he was named after his dad. I only saw Woody's dad once in my whole life, it seems like if a Lumbee person doesn't want to see them you won't but it doesn't mean their not there. This ability must have made Lumbee Warriors very successful. Woody's older brother Darvil Was a great football player and would have became a legend of the game. An accident during a game in high school ended his football playing days. He was killed in an automobile accident 1 mile from his parent's house, to this day I miss him also had a good long cry over his loss. I haven't seen Woody or David in many years but they will always be in my heart.

I lost my best friend to a drug overdose losing her still hurts when I think about it my chest tightens. I love her but she made that choice not the person that sold her the d0pe n I'll never agree with charging the "dealer" for someone choosing to use drugs. An addict is not gonna stop until they get what they want. Thw government is the ones allowing the stuff to come in so using the "dealer" as a scapegoat is disgusting!

Sad they lost their excellent meteorologist and hurricane tracker Grady Horton. When you are dealing with a hurricane, it is the people who make all the difference. Does anyone listen or is it business as usual?

The Camp Lejeune Marine Corps/ Navy military base, is perhaps the most well- known, widespread, and long- running water contamination case in North Carolina... But, apparently this is a huge problem both on military bases and in the civilian arena - and, in many states. This is outrageous and shameful - that the government more often than not, covers up, downplays, and ignores such things. Who knows how many are affected? It has been up to a few activists and lawyers, and some victims themselves, to make legislative changes and initiate litigation.

I was at home with my mom and older brother. We were 4 and 8 years old and living in a new development in Toronto. Dad was in hospital having surgery. As we looked out our front window it was dark way too early that day. Our neighboring community of Weston was older and hit hard. Interesting note that the nickname of Huricane Hazel was to become the way folks referred Hazel who was, many years later, mayor of Mississauga, Ontario just outside of Toronto. She was a feisty opponent and passed away in her 90s still involved in local politics
